Motor accidents cause 72% of PI claims

Research by the PIAB, who process personal injury claims in Ireland, has found that most of them are due to motor accidents.

In Ireland the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB) assesses the amount of compensation to be paid to injured claimants (except in clinical negligence cases) rather than claims going through the courts.

The board found that motor accidents accounted for 72% of all the claims they processed last year. The average compensation awarded for a motor liability claim was €21,707 (£17,084) and men seem to be receiving slightly more compensation on average.

Approximately 80% of claimants cited multiple or neck, back and whiplash injuries as the basis of their claim. Pelvis/leg/foot injuries, generated the highest compensation payment at €28,519, despite affecting a much smaller proportion of claimants.

Patricia Byron, Chief Executive, PIAB, said:

“This data arising from PIAB’s 2007 claims profiling should assist in identifying trends in motor accidents, specifically relating to location and injury types, and may assist those involved in the development of risk minimisation programmes.”
