Nothing to sniff at

A Dutch winemaker and taster has insured his nose for approximately £4m (€5m) after hearing about a man who lost his sense of smell in a car accident.

According to Lloyds of London, Ilja Gort, the owner of Bordeax-based Chateau de La Garde and producer of Tulipe Wines has been co-insured by Watkins Syndicate and Allianz Nederland for damage to his nose and sense of smell.

Gorta sought the cover after he heard about a man who lost his sense of smell due to a car accident. He was concerned that it would seriously affect his livelihood if the same thing happened to him, as he said that sense of smell is very important in wine-making.

This unusual-sounding cover is not the only nose-related case for Watkins syndicate. Apparently, it is a common purchase for a range of occupations, and Watkins are currently working on a policy with a US perfume consultant who develops new fragrances for perfume houses.
