Compensation for pensioner’s 24-hour radiator-crush ordeal

A pensioner, who was trapped under a radiator for 24 hours until ‘meals on wheels ‘ found her, has won compensation.

Margaretta Lewis became trapped after her radiator fell off the wall because it had been fitted with the wrong size screws. She suffered a fractured hip, broken ankle and serious burns. She wasn’t wearing her panic button at the time and was not discovered until home help arrived at her flat, and she was rushed to hospital.

She received £20,000 in damages and a formal apology from the plumber that installed the radiator.

The Independent Living Association helped launch her case. Her lawyer Richard Biggs said: “It was a very difficult case but we managed to settle out of court.”
