More Than 170 Delegates Go to Rehab for the First Time!

The first Legal & Medical Rehabilitation Conference, sponsored by AIG Medical & Rehabilitation, took place on February 12th and proved a great success with more than 170 delegates attending including rehabilitation providers, insurers, case managers, lawyers and clinicians. The conference provided excellent opportunities for debate and networking.

Held at One Great George Street, the Conference was chaired by Robin de Wilde QC, chairman of the Ogden Working Party, secretary of BICMA, former chairman of the Professional Negligence Bar Association and fellow at the Royal Society of Medicine. The keynote speaker was Susan Scott-Parker OBE, founder and chief executive of the Employers’ Forum on Disability, who warned that employers were ‘losing good people’ by not making adaptations for disabled people. Her key message was that Disability Discrimination Act compliance is not static; it requires flexibility and an ongoing commitment to meeting the changing needs of staff.

Other speakers included Norman Cottington, (BICMA) who spoke about the origins and application of the Rehabilitation Code; and consultant physiotherapist, Christopher Mercer (Consultant Physiotherapist), took a detailed look into the role of physical therapy and investigations in the management of back and neck pain. Melanie Summers, (headline sponsor AIG Medical & Rehabilitation) and Dr Jonathan Cooke (The Treatment Works) gave an informed speech about assessing injured parties’ need for rehabilitation.

Tony Goff, chairman of Motor Accident Solicitors’ Society, provided the claimant solicitor’s perspective; facial plastics consultant Bippon Vinayak (Doctors Chambers) gave an explanation of facial anatomy; Liz Haunch (Independent Case Management Consultancy) looked at case management; and was followed by Heather Batey, a head injury specialist (Reach Personal Injury Service). David Bingham (IPRS) explained the history of rehabilitation; and Claire Ginders (Remploy), a trustee of the Vocational Rehabilitation Association, spoke about the psychological side of rehabilitation. The conference concluded with a lively panel discussion on the future of rehabilitation services.
